Volunteers and Pets Visiting Health Care Facilities
On practically any day of the week you can find Delta San Antonio volunteers
and their special pets visiting many area health care facilities that participate
in the Animal Ambassadors Program.
Animal-assisted activities are basically the casual "meet-and-greet" activities
that involve pets visiting people. The same activity can be repeated with
many people, unlike a therapy program that is tailored to a particular
person or medical condition.
Animal-assisted therapy identifies specific goals and objectives for each
individual, and progress is measured.
The Delta Society’s® outreach program, Pet Partners®, trains and
registers volunteers and their pets to visit in hospitals, nursing homes,
and other health care facilities. The Society’s Service Dog Center provides
referral, advocacy, and education about animals that assist people with
disabilities.
Local affiliates such as Delta San Antonio with its Animal Ambassadors
Program help to improve the lives of the elderly, disabled persons,
psychiatric patients, and abused, neglected and hospitalized children through
pet visits and therapy programs.
The affiliates also provide other community services including grief support
for pet owners and educational outreach presentations.
Pet visitation, animal-assisted activities and animal-assisted therapy
are provided to the community in partnership with local health care facilities
including Air Force Village Health Care Center, Children's Shelter of San
Antonio, Golden Manor Jewish Home, Incarnate Word Retirement Community,
San Antonio State Hospital, Santa Rosa Children's Hospital, Santa Rosa
Skilled Nursing Unit, The Fredericksburg, Villa Serina, and Warm Springs
Rehabilitation Center.
