75 Poodles Living In Their Own Waste

Roughly 75 poodles were taken by animal services Wednesday and a Vacaville woman was arrested on suspicion of cruelty to animals after it was discovered the dogs were living in their own waste and suffering from health problems.

Nancy J. O'Neill, 48, was arrested after Vacaville police and Humane Animal Service officers served a search warrant on 157 Fair Oaks Drive and discovered the dogs both in cages and roaming around the condominium. Neighbors had been complaining of a stench for weeks and those closest to the house were having problems with flies in their own homes.

Police and animal services originally tried to inspect the house on Sunday, but no one was home. They found a note that said the resident slept during the days and solicitors should not knock or ring the door bell. They also found an abundant number of flies and dog feces on the porch. They tried again Monday before serving the warrant Wednesday when they found dogs hiding throughout the home and urine and feces covered just about every inch of the floor and furniture.

Vacaville police Lt. Ed Goldberg said records show O'Neill had been selling the dogs since 1986 and that she claimed to live in the residence. Vacaville firefighters had to use air masks when they went in to remove the dogs. One dog was dead.

The dogs were taken out in cages and were transported to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals office on Peabody Road where they were inspected, treated and will remain until the case is concluded.

"The odor on some days was so bad you couldn't sit outside on the patio to have a cup of coffee," said a neighbor who did not want to be identified. Other neighbors said O'Neill would arrive early in the morning, leave and then come back in the evening.

The house was condemned by a city building inspector and emergency crews were medically treated after one complained of pain from the fumes generated by urine and feces. O'Neill was taken to Solano County Jail.
